Abstract

Literature studies on cognitive failures show that studies on the subject are at the beginning level for our
country. This study was carried out to contribute to the expansion of literatüre in Turkish language. Cognitive
failures come with some important problems related to business life, private life, and social order. Therefore, there
is a need for studies to prevent or reduce cognitive failures. It is important to contribute to the literature with
researches examines the causes and consequences of cognitive failures, their effects on private business lives.
The main reason led this research is the existence of the interaction between cognitive failures and job stress
and five-factor personality traits. Therefore, the purpose of the research is to interpret the mediating role of fivefactor personality traits in the relationship between job stress and cognitive failures. The population of the research
consists of the employees of two public hospitals in Elazig city center. The data were collected by the questionnaire
technique. The population size is 1451 and the sample size is 427.
Research findings revealed that the relationship between job stress and cognitive failures was mediated by
the characteristics of responsibility and emotional balance. In addition to this finding, it was determined that
extraversion, agreeableness, and openness to experience did not mediate the relationship between job stress and
cognitive failures.
